Congratulations, you wrote a manuscript! You're ready to tackle the editing process, but where do you start?
You may know developmental editing by another name: substantive, structural, content or critique editing. I look at the big picture, and guide you in strengthening the novel. I look into plot and character arcs and cutting out what isn’t working.
This is the most comprehensive editing package available and recommended for first-time authors grappling with style, voice and knowing where and how to ensure the story is structurally sound. Of course, many of my regular clients love this type of edit, as it combines developmental and line editing as one. This allows them to be aware to refine during revisions where the pacing is being slowed by the use of certain words and phrases.
For a full-length manuscript (over 50,000 words) you can expect one round of editing along with the commentary in the manuscript, a detailed 10+ page report.

Lauren's developmental edit was incredibly thorough and helpful. She provided a great mix of positive notes along with useful critique and items for improvement. She was able to point out changes in style and suggest some overall areas to be strengthened. The chapter by chapter breakdown she provided was a gold mine of information I referred to often during revisions and helped me to restructure several of my chapters. It was very worthwhile to have Lauren review my manuscript even at a stage where I knew it needed work. — Jo Holloway
This kind of edit is perfect for authors who have perfected their style and voice. They don’t need the line editing part, just need help with the structural aspect. Instead of the comprehensive development edit, We’ll steer away from working on your prose and focus on feedback on a scene-only level using the comments feature in Word or Pages. You may want line editing after the structural revisions are completed. Check out what line editing includes in the next section.

Your plot structure is solid! But the characters’ dialogue isn’t natural and the prose needs refinement. This is where line editing is perfect! Please be aware, this isn’t copyediting. Copyediting focuses on grammar and punctuation, you do this after your structural and line editing changes. Line editing is working on getting the right amount of dialogue tags, perfecting the language of the characters and ensuring the words and actions of the characters read realistic and not clunky to the reader.
